Brent Waterways, London local history, river Brent, Waterways of Brent, water facilities in North West London, rivers in London, cultural heritage, Brent council information

Water plays an important part in our lives. Throughout history we see that man has always lived near water. Big cities all over the world grow near rivers. London itself has grown on and around the River Thames.

Brent waterways, although not as significant and well known, have been important to the development and prosperity of the area.

Brent Council, together with the Heritage Lottery Fund and London's Waterway Partnership have enabled, for the first time, information on the waterways of Brent to be made available on the worldwide web as a resource for all. Information presented is based on research and current initiatives.

The role of waterways in an urban society

  • Places of rest for urban dwellers: even today, many a pleasant walk may still be enjoyed along the river banks, and a boat or barge trip is a soothing and refreshing experience;
  • Wild life sanctuary: water and land flora and fauna;
  • Transportation of goods and people, especially before the invention and growth of motorised transport;
  • A power generation source for various industries;
  • Dividing administrative areas and giving names to streets and places;
  • Waterways are our historical heritage with many landmarks associated with rivers and canals;
  • Water for everyday needs, especially in the days before centralised water supply systems;
  • Waste disposal system, especially before drastic growth of town population and the development of modern sewage systems.
